BIOLOGY
Oahu has a wide variety of plant and animal life.
The State fish
- Humuhumunukanukuapua'a, or the reef trigger-fish. It is eight to nine inches long and lives
in the shallow waters of reefs around Hawaii. Using its powerful
jaws and sharp teen, it feeds on sea urchins, crabs, coral, and other
fish.

The State bird -
Many species are rare and endangered including the Nene Goose (the official state bird). The Nene, grows to a height of about
two feet and weighs about five pounds. Only about one thousand live in the
wild on the islands of Hawaii and Maui, although you can see them in
captivity at the Honolulu Zoo. Nene live to nest in the lava fields.
Unlike other geese, they have little webbing between their toes and don't
swim.

The Humpback Whale
(the official state marine
mammal). Humpback whales grow to be over fifty feet long and can weigh up
to one hundred thousand pounds. They have long flippers equal to
one-third their body length. They come to Hawaiian waters from
November - February. Humpbacks are an endangered species.

CULTURAL HISTORY
Oahu is a multi-cultural society with major immigration from:
- Polynesia - 700 A.D.
- United States - 1820
- China - 1852
- Japan - 1868
- Portugal - 1878
- Puerto Rico - 1900
- Korea - 1903

The flag of Hawaii
was commissioned by King Kamehameha I of Hawaii in 1816. King
Kamehameha I had unified the islands of Hawaii in 1810, using a schooner
armed with a cannon. Before that time, each of the large islands had been a
separate kingdom.
The flag: The eight stripes of white,
red and blue represent the eight main islands of Hawaii.
The Union Jack (the flag of Great Britain)
is in the upper left corner of Hawaii's flag, honoring Hawaii's long
relationship with the British.
