Kayaking the Na Pali Coast

Haena

Beginning: Launch at 7 AM at Ha`ena in center of photo and turn left. "Tunnels," the popular snorkeling reef, is in the foreground - don't paddle there? Just around the upper corner you can see the breaks off Ke`e Beach a half-hour away. Then on past Hanakapi`ai Beach and into the caves - weather permitting.

Kalalau

Almost There: By Noon, Kalalau Valley and River Bluffs (Near Boat) are in sight . Hikers descend Red Hill (left foreground) to end 11-mile hike. Kalalau Beach lies beyond the river. Kayakers land along sand and camp in woods or caves.

Nualolo

Onward from Kalalau: Pass Honopu Arch, visit the open-ceiling cave, lunch & snorkel at Nu`alolo Kai (next-to-last point at upper right). Don't disturb Monk Seals resting on beach. Continue around the corner to camp at Miloli`i, reef breakers are just visible at extreme right.

Polihale

End: Final landing at Polihale Beach. The waves can be big and the sand is always hot!

After the End: Drag everything (including Bob) to the parking lot and showers (far FAR right). Blast the sand out of all crevices, get ready for the airport, and pray the outfitter brings cold juice and beer! And don't forget the end-of-trip photo.
