Harris, a longtime resident of Hawaii, received a B.S. degree from Purdue University and holds masters degrees from New Mexico University, the University of Southern California, and the University of Hawaii. The author of Mangos, Mangos, Mangos and Tropical Fruit Cookbook, Harris's research and recipes about tropical fruit appear frequently in newspapers and magazines. Her Tropical Peanut Soup entry won the Christian Brothers Sherry-Bon Appetit Magazine Recipe Contest. An English teacher and librarian, Ms. Harris has taught tropical fruit cookery at Kapiolani Community College, Lyon Arboretum, and Ho`omalahia Botanical Garden. She grows many tropical fruits such as banana, avocado, mango, lemon, passion fruit, papaya, pomegranate, and Surinam cherry in her garden. Harris's current research is on international foods and spices and the use of tropical fruits in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
