Travel Tips

The Temperature rarely goes over 90 degrees.  "Usually", daytime temperatures range from the high 70's to low 80's.  Evening temperatures may range from 69-75 degrees.  Humidity will vary based on our "trade winds".  Our winter months may see some rain and nighttime temperatures in the mid 60's.

Our islands have windward and leeward Coasts.  The Windward side is usually not as warm and has more rain.  Most resorts are on the Leeward Coasts.  See our Weather Page for more detailed information & forecasts.

Pack Lightly

Hawaii has a tropical climate & we dress for comfort.  In the Daytime, Shorts and/or Bathing attire are appropriate.  In the Evening - (Men) Slacks & a "nice" "Aloha" shirt are fine for most dining & Events.  Jackets are rarely worn.  Women usually wear light weight dresses with a cover-up for dining & events.

Travel Tip #1 - Many Hotels, Restaurants, Golf Courses, & Attractions, as well as Aloha Air & Hawaiian Airlines,  offer a discount to Hawaiian Residents (Kama'aina Rates).  It may pay to stop & get a local Hawaiian ID Card at the State of Hawaii ($15) (Social Security Card & Birth Certificate Needed).  This would make you an Island resident & allow for Kama'aina discounts.

Travel Tip #2 - Aloha & Hawaiian Airlines are increasing their Mainland Presence & Have "Specials" to Introduce their New Services.  Some fares are extremely low!

Travel Tip #3 -  Aloha & Hawaiian Airlines Offer Special Kama'aina Rates of Approximately $69+ One Way to Any Island (Prices do Vary & Conditions May Apply).  These are by Special Coupons Available at any LOCAL Hawaiian Travel Agency.  (This may become passé due to the Airline Industry's Post 9-11 Business Slump)

Travel Tip #4 - Aloha & Hawaiian Airways have unadvertised Island Trip Packages (Air, Hotel, & Car Rentals).  The cost of these packages are extremely low & usually are  available once you get to Hawaii.  If you have some flexibility, you can save some big $'s.  Kama'aina may apply.

Travel Tip #5 - Car Rentals - All the Islands, except Oahu, are rather rural in nature, where a Car rental is almost a necessity.  Oahu is the most populous Island & most visitors stay in Waikiki.  A car rental is not needed to stay in Waikiki.  Take Ground Transportation from the Airport, and use THE BUS or cabs to navigate in Honolulu.  Most attractions have free shuttle buses!  If you want to explore, rent a car for the day.  This program will save you the cost of rentals, parking (hotels charge from $5-$15 per day), gas, insurance, etc.

Travel Tip#6 - Tipping - As elsewhere in the US, the current standard of tipping is 20%.  That applies to Restaurants, Bars, and Travel Activities.  Maid Service is an optional tip and should be considered based upon service - $2 per day is minimum.  Bellmen & Skycaps should get a minimum of $2.00 per bag.  Anything less is an insult.

Travel Tip#7 - Hawaii is part of the United States.  The 48 Contiguous States are called The Mainland, not "The States".  People from Hawaii are called Locals, not Natives.  Non-Local Caucasians are called Haoles.  While Local Hawaiians have a high degree of tolerance with tourists, they do have Pride.  Be Considerate!
