Lanai - The Secluded Island
Lanai Overview Maui County Quick Facts
Originally Lanai was agriculturally based with sugarcane and cattle grazing. In 1922. Lanai was purchased by Dole Company and it developed the island into a pineapple-growing center. In 1961, 98% of the island became the property of the Castle and Cooke Co., with plans to designate a large majority of Lanai for the development of forests, meadows, and some agriculture. In 1985, Castle and Cooke Co. was sold to David Murdoch and he has developed Lanai into a resort island. There are presently two resorts on the island.
