Who's Who here?

When in Hawaii you'll find various people referred to and it might get a little confusing.  Here's a quick guide to the names you might hear...

          Duke Aiona

Lt. Governor of Hawaii.

          Ben Cayetano

Former Governor of Hawaii.  A Democrat, he narrowly won reelection.

His wife, Vicky Cayetano is a successful businesswoman and popular local figure.

Linda Lingle

Governor of Hawaii. Former Mayor of Maui.

Jeremy Harris

Mayor of Honolulu.

Frank Fasi

Former Mayor of Honolulu.  Recently attempted to run for governor, but was soundly defeated in the Republican primary by Linda Lingle, at which point he threw his support behind Cayetano. Subsequently ran for Mayor again and was easily defeated.

Fred Von Appen

Former University of Hawaii football coach.  Had a dismal (5-31)  win-loss record and was let go after just four seasons.

Peter Carlisle
Honolulu prosecutor.

Mazie Hirono
Popular former Lt. Governor of the State of Hawaii.

June Jones

Head football coach at UH and apparent candidate for sainthood.  Led the formerly woeful Bows to a strong season, winning WAC road games and an Oahu Bowl Victory.  Formerly with the San Diego Chargers.

His second season was not as spectacular but he remains popular.  Recently injured in a solo car accident but appears to be recovering nicely.

Margery Bronster

Former state Attorney General.  Let go by the state legislature in an unpopular move.

Hawaii Books I recommend

"Na Mamo: Hawaiian People Today" by Jay Hartwell

An interesting look at a collection of Hawaiian people practicing traditional Hawaiian arts and interests in the context of modern society.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

More to come...soon...
