Looking For: William P "Knobby" Walsh Rank: Sgt Unit: 504th/82nd Co B Service Dates: 1942-1945
Information: I am looking for information on my father, William P. "Knobby" Walsh from Waunakee and Westport, Wisconsin. He served in the 82nd from approx 1942 to 1945. He trained at Ft Bragg and Ft Benning, and also at Alta Utah for skiing. He shipped out of NY in 1942(?) to Casablanca. He jumped into Sicily, Italy and Holland. He fought in Belgium and Germany as well. He is mentioned in Sgt Carter's "Devils in Baggy Pants" as "Knobby Walsh" (the Joe Palooka comic strip had Joe's manager named Knobby Walsh). Dad was awarded the DSC for his efforts at Cheneux, Belgium. He was wounded in Italy and Belgium and awarded the Purple Heart with an oak leaf cluster. He was in the 504th and usually a Sgt--although he lost and regained some stripes a couple of times for (probably) acting like a young and bull-headed Irishman. He is mentioned in Tucker's book but misidentified as "George" Walsh. He never talked much about his experiences, but I have since obtained his records from St Louis and (except for being held in reserve at D Day) it seems his unit must have seen a great deal of action. He was in Europe until the end, and was involved in the liberation of the concentration/work camp at Woebblin. (He brought home-and buried in the closet-the Nazi flag hanging on the wall at Woebblin--his records include written permission to return with the flag, a Luger and a German paratrooper knive). I hope this message doesn't sound boastful, and information would be most appreciated.

Information: My name is Rick Mommers, I am 17 years old and living in The Netherlands. At the American Military Cemetery in the town called Margraten (the Netherlands) I adopted the grave of Adrian Hoskins. He was fighting for our freedom during the Second World War. Someone told me that probably his dad was in prison in the 1930's, that is the only thing I know until now about him. In case you knew Adrian Hoskins, I hereby want to ask you if you maybe can help me to gather more information about the soldier whom grave I adopted. I am pointing on information like; how did he look like, when and where he has been born, where he lived, if he had family, how he spent his youth, at what base he had his education, what kind of division he was serving, where he was fighting, the way he died, if he had medals and if there are relatives who are still alive and so on. I would like to ask you if it is possible to help me finding an answer to the above mentioned questions. Hopefully it is also possible to receive some pictures of him and (photo) copies of some documents and maybe to correspond with some relatives of Adrian Hoskins. Everything that could be useful for me is welcome. I really hope and appreciate to receive an answer on this letter. I was searching on Internet and hoped to find some information about him, but unfortunately without any results. You are my last hope to help me. It would be nice to know more about the person whose grave I take care of and lay flowers every week. I enclosed more information about the soldier. I am thanking you in advance and look forward to your reply.

I have known a trooper for many years and would like to know if you could tell me what unit he was in. He says he was on a jump at Sicily that was shot up by navy gunfire and was in Bastonge as well. His name is Hank Crist, possibly Henry Crist, and may have gone into service in Bakersfield, Calif. Can you help?

Pvt John A. Burnett, ASN 36598335, came from the State of Michigan, was a member of Company A and was killed on 18 September 1944 while attacking the Honinghutje bridge over the Maas-Waal canal, west of Nijmegen. (Click on the picture to see it full-size.) Pvt Burnett was first buried in the temporary American cemetery Molenhoek in plot-grave number A-10-185 on 23 September 1944, after the war he found his last resting place in the American Military Cemetery Margraten in plot-grave number F-4-8.
If anyone has contact with the family, I wonder if they might be able to help me with a picture of him and if they have any information if he took part in the invasion of Sicily of July 1943. I am doing research on that invasion and am looking forward to all kind of information and pictures.
Hope to hear from you.

Follow-up from Dave Berry of the 504PIR Assocation:
A quick search of NARA Honor Rolls of WW2 Casualties shows BURNETT as being from Wayne County, Michigan, which encompasses Detroit.
I am not in that area, but there must be an historical society or county library that has newspaper archives from the war. Given a clipping with nex of kin listed it would be possible to do a genealogy forward to today to find his descendents.
Casualty listings and articles usually appeared 5 to 9 weeks AFTER the event. This is the average I have seen in the New York Times lists. I wonder if such lists appeared in the Detroit Press. They usually gave the soldiers name, and the name of his relative, their town and their address.
I'm seeking anyone who knew Pte John F Burnett of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regt A.Co of the 82 Airborne division. The Pte was killed on 18th Sept, 1944. He enlisted in Michigan. I have news for his family.

My father, Pvt Ed Swanson, served with the 504 at Hill 1205, Anzio and Holland. He was in F company and was wounded in Holland on Sept 27th. I am trying to track down any trooper that may have known my dad. I realize you were in a different company, but I guess there is always a chance you may remember him. I believe he was in the 2nd platoon; his sergeant was Esmer Partridge who was killed later in the war. His best friends was Nelson Irving who was also in F company and Eugene Stretzenburg. My dad was next to Frank Svaboda when he was killed on Anzio. Do any of these names ring a bell? I'd love to hear from you. This is a picture of my dad (middle) with 2 unidentified troopers. My father, 1st LT Chester Anderson, was a member of Co. G of the 504th. From limited records of his service, I learned that he graduated from Ft. Benning Infantry School (OCS/15th Company/3rd Student Training Regiment), arrived in the European Theater on 24SEP44 and departed DEC45. He was a platoon commander, and received the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. I'm trying to piece together his time of service and learn more about the circumstances surrounding his Silver Star, and would appreciate information anyone may have on him or his company.

My name is David R. Bowes and I am trying to find some of my fellow troopers who served with me in the Dominican Republic b/w 65/67. We left Ft. Bragg the last of April 65 and landed at San Isidro Air Base. We humped into Santo Domingo with our Co. under the supervision of 1st SGT Mathis. I am really interested in trying to locate:
- Richard (Charlie) Worcester of Lewiston, Maine
- Adolph Breeze of New Jersey
- Raymond Flowers, city unknown
and anyone else who may have a recollection of the time and situation. I have noticed you make no mention of the Dom Rep in your 504th PIR Assoc. but men from the 82nd did die there. None from the 504th thankfully. If anyone can help me locate any of these people or anyone else who served there Please contact me. I enlisted in Texas and moved to Maine, my original home state, when I retired from the Police Dept in TX.

My uncle Ozzie A Johnson was killed on 1/1/45 in Belgium while serving with the 504th PIR. Although at this late date, it may be impossible to find anyone still living who may know of my uncle and the circumstances of his death...I am hopeful. He was in C Co and I know he is buried in Henri-Chapelle Cemetary...
A business associate of my father lives within 10 miles of the cemetery and puts flowers on Ozzie's grave for me. My father is deceased, but served with the 63rd Inf. Division during WWII.
The only stories I know about Ozzie come from my mother and are of how the family reacted to his death. Ozzie has a daughter that he never saw, and she is now dying of cancer. As with most of us who are internet illiterate, her information also came from family sources and she would like to know more.
Prior to my father's death, we had written letters to seek out information. This was prior to the internet boom and we had no luck. With all of the military websites available now, I hope I will be able to locate someone who knew him.
My father was the historian for the 63rd prior to his death. They have a great association that is still going strong and have been able to help many relatives of men from the 63rd who were KIA.
Thank you so much for any assistance you may give me in pursuing this.

Can you help me in contacting someone who would have information regarding the occurrences of the 504th in the Battle of the Bulge? My father, Thomas F. Bailey, was in Werbomont Belgium when the 504th came through there. Around that time my father captured 17 of the German spy commandos, in front of a farm house about 400 meters east of Werbomont. He was acting as a forward command post for his outfit along with two others, whom quickly disappeared. He actually bluffed the spies into thinking he wasn't alone. A short while later after that last jeep-full was caught, a handful of troops came in from the northeast. He handed the spies off to them after it was decided that they both were really Americans and that he was alone. My father believes that the troops were elements of the 82nd airborne or possible the 30th Infantry Division.
I am attempting to contact any such members that were in the area at the time, 504th and 508th PIRs. Can you help in contacting the 508th PIR, is there a sister Web site for them? There was a fairly large battle in a Hedge row type field near Werbomont also that we believe involved the 82nd elements. There was a force of roughly 70 Germans apposing the 82nd and my father (also a few others from the 143rd)
I'm also trying to locate who my father reported to near Elsonborn. This would have been the command of the 18th AAA at the start of the Bulge. My father did some recon and ended up sniping a field full of Germans, killing 7 and pursued by the rest resulting in hand to hand combat. This was reported to the 18th command upon his return.
I am currently working with a Congressman to get him his Silver Star that was never put on his discharge papers. Apparently the paperwork was ordered burned when the Germans got to close. Anyone with information or ideas for me I give the utmost thanks and appreciation to.
Sincerely, David Bailey

I am writing on behalf of my uncle James Earl Grimes, who was a member of the 82nd Airborne in the late 1940's or early 1950's, he has had number of strokes so all I can go on is the things I have been told in years past. I normally would have time to spare, but he is in jeopardy of losing his disability benefits if we can't find some documentation of the following incident:
During a training jump his chute didn't open, he pulled the emergency chute and nothing, he was able to land on top of someone else's chute, work his way of the top and both of them landed without much injury, except the one he landed on had a broken leg, this was filmed and shown on newsreels, but the Army has no record of it happening. My uncle was told that since he wasn't hurt if he went to the infirmary or sickbay he would have to start training all over. If anyone can help us out, it would be greatly appreciated, because as a Army Mother of 2 I know you are all a great group of men.

Dear friends,
I have a question and hope you can help me. I am looking for information on Captain Herbert C. Kaufman, ASN 0-385635, HQ/3 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was killed on 9 July 1943 during the invasion of Sicily and he was standing in the door, the plane he flew in was fired upon by the enemy and Captain Kaufman was hit in his throat. He either fell out of the plane or jumped from the plane, followed by two or three men of his stick. The plane was probably still over the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Yesterday I received his Individual Report of Burial and found that he was reburied in a temporary cemetery of Caronia on 22 September 1943, Sicily was liberated at that time. I looked this location on the map where Caronia was located and found it on the north coast, about halfway the northern coast, at least between Palermo in the west and Messina in the east.
Since no report of Burial was included I asked the Archives to-day to check the files again.
When you go from Gela on the southern coast to Caronia, there is a little of 80 miles to be covered overland, if his body went with the tide, his body must have floated more than 300 miles - following the coast line.
I have the following questions:
- Who was in Captain Kaufman's plane?
- Who were the other two or three troopers who jumped over the sea?
- What might have happened with Captain Kaufman's body? I cannot inmagine that his body was moved overland, while there were three American cemeteries in the south.
Understand that I am asking information that happened more almost 57 years ago. I will be in Sicily coming 11 July. Three veterans of the 316th Troop Carrier Group with their wives and one granddaughter will be with me (one of the pilots was shot down by friendly fire that 11 July 1943), as will a brother of the 505th paratrooper killed on 11 July 1943 at Biazza Ridge on the Ponte Dirillo across the Acate River.
All the best from Nijmegen, hope to hear from you.

My Father, a member of your ranks during the Second World War and serving in HQ Co. and later intelligence is in fast declining health. I believe he will not live much longer. Outside of his family, service with the 82nd is the greatest pride and the greatest touchstone of his life. He knew General Ridgway--was an aide on his staff--and he knew General Gavin when he assumed command. He is pictured in a photo in General Ridgway's memoirs SOLDIER on the back of the second page of photos beginning on page 116. The caption below the picture reads "Burdened with their heavy combat gear, officers and men of the 82nd Airborne await the take-off for Holland." He is the last face on the extreme right (foreground). He is sitting across from Bob Weinecke on the extreme left opposite side(foreground). As well as Market-Garden and Overlord, Dad was with the Divsion in Camp Soisson, in the Ardennes and finally in Berlin. For a man from a small North Carolina town (Belhaven) it was the grandest and noblest adventure of a lifetime.
He is now near his final hookup and final jump to join Matt Ridgway, Jim Gavin, Don Faith and all the rest of his fellow ALL-AMERICANS who have preceeded him. It is my humble request to the Division that my father, William Bernard Voliva, be given an official funeral. His home, Belhaven, N.C., is very near Fayetteville and Fort Bragg. Any help and assistance in this matter would be greatly and profoundly appreciated.

I am writing stories about my father, Mike Dugan, and I am researching W.W.II. He was in the 504 from the first jump in Sicily to Holland, where he was wounded, and then returned and served until the end of the War. I would really like to find what battalion he was in if possible. I have visited the museum at Fort Bragg and contacted the military records department but cannot get information specific to him. I would like to make contact with anyone who might be able to give me any information.
Personal information: Mike was 19 in 1942, 5'11, wavy blond hair, blue eyes. He came from Mullens West Va. and was a private/corporal/sgt. at various times. He chewed and smoked a cigar. His injury occurred about Oct. 15 when his squad was taking a farm house and a mistake by a new lt. brought in artillary on them. He was the only survivor, with a head wound that required a metal plate to repair the fracture.
Also, I know that some in the 504 volunteered to join the Normandy invasion. I would like to know exactly how that was handled. Were the volunteers fighting as a separate unit (and where), or were they integrated into existing units? The books I have read do not give the particulars.
Thank You, Kevin Dugan (dkdalj@aol.com)

Hello, I need help in finding surviving veterans of your Regiment/ Co.H / Operation Market Garden. My first cousin Lt. Douglas Felber USAAC was the co-pilot of a C-47 that carried the below listed troopers into battle Holland 9-17-44. The plane was hit by FLAK on the way in and crashed, but not before the troopers jumped. Pilot & Co-pilot were killed in the crash and buried in Holland (temp) by members of the resistance. This C-47 was the only one lost on the way in to the drop zone in that particular flight pattern that day. I would like to contact any one of these troopers if possible to learn more, and put ( him ) in touch with Lt Felbers' sister... his only surviving immediate family member.

Hello. My name is David Olie and I am currently researching the Battle of Hitdorf, 6 April 1945, for which Co. A of the 504th won a Presidential Unit Citation. I was also involved in this battle. I would be very interested in any eyewitness accounts, any details on the German forces engaged, and especially any tactical level maps or aerial photos of the town and surrounding area from the period.
My intention is to use this material in developing a project for the Advanced Squad Leader tactical wargaming system. The Hitdorf battle has already been represented in the system in a rather abstract fashion, but I would like to give it a more detailed and historically accurate representation. Thanks to anyone who can help. My e-mail is: daveolie@klis.com

Hello:
My Name is Nathan Phelps, I'm a reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette in Green Bay, Wisc. I'm working on a story about Sgt. Willard G. Tess who was with F Co. when he was killed in Jan. 1945. I would like help finding other men in the 504th who may have know him and can tell me about him, both as a person and solider. I'm in contact with family for the story (he was from the near by town of Sturgeon Bay) and they seem to think they have many letters he sent home, which will help give Willard a voice if they can be found. But I would like to talk to some people they knew him. If this story pans out I may pursue the story further and turn it into a larger work. But that may not happen either. Any help you can render would be great. You can contact me at this e-mail address (which is my personal account) or call me at work at 920-431-8310. I'll call you back to save long distance charges.
Again, thanks for your help.

I have volunteered (or been volunteered by the family) to write a book about a former member of the 504th during WWII - Robert Blankenship. Robert (now deceased) was my wife's uncle. Robert was a Georgia boy, a small town football hero, that made a mark during his tenure in the 504th. I have only sketchy details from the family but he was one of the personnel that was awarded the Order of William by the Netherlands for action associated with Operation Market Garden and the Nijmegen Bridge. When I visited the 82nd Museum at Ft Bragg a few years back, there is quite a display from one of the other recipients of this honor in the museum.
As I understand it from his surviving brother, Robert was in the 3rd Battalion, Company I. His nickname through the Italian Campaign was "Booby" because he had encountered so many booby traps. He is reputedly the most decorated Georgia service member of WWII.
After the war he went into business in DeRidder, LA and was the mayor of that town for some years. Every Armed Forces day he jumped with the parachute team - #1 out - his honor the mayor. Always Airborne! He died a number of years later of the shrapnel he carried around.
Although I have two books underway now and understand research, I am unsure how to approach the this one from the informational standpoint due to the unfamiliarity with the holdings. Also, I am wonder if some of the surviving members might remember Robert. Your suggestions and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful website on the 504th. I am in the process of writing a novel about a woman whose father was Major William R. Beall, 3/504th PIR. I believe he was the XO of the battalion and actually in command of the operation in which he was killed on September 24, 1943 in the Chiunzi Pass area near Pagani, Italy. I have reviewed your entire website and greatly appreciate the material that I found there. If ANYONE has any information about Major Beall, either from contact with him in training in the US or in the operations in Sicily or the Naples area, I would very much appreciate knowing it.
To me, there are no greater heroes than those you honor with your efforts in this website. Again, my thanks and congratulations.

My father was with the 81st, I thought it was the 82nd and they changed the the number during World War II, maybe I am wrong , with a unit called the Red Devils, He served two tours because he re-enlisted during the 2nd War while in Italy, records were partly destroyed during the "Big Fire", the patch on his arm was two A's it was red, white and blue with the A's being white and he had a plane with a parachute on it I believe for his hat, I saw pic's 25 years ago, at this moment I don't even own one picture. He was born George Allen Newby but he hated the name George so he went by Allen, my Uncle James was in the same organization. My fathers D.O.B. is 3/20/1921 and died in Tulsa 5/11/1979, I have his social security number if that will help. They used different numbers then and I know about the RA and the US his other number is 34370202, he was in North Africa, Italy and possibly Normandy. I remember while a little child seeing a picture and he received a lot of medals: Bronze Stars, Silver Stars, Campaign Ribbons, Marksman, Presidential Citations, I believe they were unit citations. I would like any information or pictures that may include my father, and am trying to get a set of his ribbons and medals. Any help will be appreciated.

Greetings I'm sending out a message to your organization to let you know my friend S/Sgt.Roy T. Bireley was in the 504, 3rd Battalion, Co. G. He enlisted Nov. 1942 and went overseas in April 1943 aboard the SS Washington. He stayed with the 504 throughout the war and made several combat jumps including Sicily and Market Garden. He was discharged Sept. 1945. He is now 84 years old and still enjoys fair health for his age. Would there be any comrades still around that remember him I would be glad to make the contact provided he would agree too. With all respect and most sincerely, Bill Wilde e-mail:

I am looking for letters and diaries written by US service personnel during the second world war to support over 400 hours of colour film and much colour photography that we possess of the war. If anyone has possession of such letters and diaries from the war or can direct me towards any sources I would very much appreciate if you could contact me. It is a worthwhile project and something that I hope you would like to contribute to as the 60th anniversary approaches. Any ideas appreciated. Hoping to hear from you, Adam Grint:
