Photo taken of the Honolulu Marathon Clinic in the mid-1970s with Dr. Jack Scaff (in hat) addressing the clinic members at the (old) Kapiolani Bandstand in Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. The Honolulu Marathon Clinic (not associated with the Honolulu Marathon Association) was started to help the beginning runner make the transition to his/her first marathon. The Clinic now meets across from Paki Hale on Paki Avenue in Kapiolani Park at 7:30AM on Sundays from mid-March until the Honolulu Marathon in December
This photo was taken in the mid-1970s from the roof of the old Kapiolani Bandstand. During this period, it was not unusual for the Sunday morning Honolulu Marathon Clinic to have more than several hundred participants. Because of the large groups of runners, police escorts were often provided by the City and County of Honolulu to facilitate traffic flow and promote safety. The Honolulu Marathon Clinic is sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation, City and County of Honolulu.
This picture of a group of unidentified runners was taken on November 27, 1975 at the Honolulu Marathon Clinic Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot is an annual "predict-your-own-time" event where participants try to guess how long they will take to complete the measured 10 mile course. This event emphasizes the importance of being able to set and maintain a predetermined pace as a prerequisite for the upcoming Honolulu Marathon in December. No watches or time keeping equipment are allowed, and the winners are usually within 10 seconds of their total predicted 10 mile finishing time.
Dr. (Black Jack) Jack Scaff (father of the Honolulu Marathon and leader of the Honolulu Marathon Clinic) approaches the Kalakaua Avenue finish line in the 1975 Honolulu Marathon. The Honolulu Marathon Association inducted Dr. Scaff into the Hall of Fame in 1996 (see the Hall of Fame in the Honolulu Marathon Association website).
