Background: The only child of a career navy officer, Edward was expected to join the navy. His vision was too poor, however. His mother's dream of his becoming a doctor was sidetracked by his poor study habits and excessive partying while attending the University of Hawaii. A second option, recommended by a friend of the family, saw him attend the University of Washington's Master of Public Health program, graduating in 1990 with honours and entry into a career as an industrial hygienist.

After working for a civilian contractor (Westinghouse) at a DoE site for five years, Edward was approached by a recruiter for a civilian contractor operating the US Army's Johnson Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System (JACADS). Because of his marital problems at the time, he jumped at the chance.

Near the middle of his contract, Edward was beginning to question the actual activities on the base. Specifically, his air sampling detected chemicals that were not on the destruction manifests and some that could not be identified by the most modern analytical methods. When he dug deeper, he discovered that there seemed to be discrepancies in the listed and actual volumes of agents being destroyed. When his inquiries were discovered, he was reprimanded, threatened with dismissal and a vaguely worded threat about his future employability. During his leave, he approached a retired Navy friend of his father. This man took his questions and concerns seriously, and asked Edward to covertly send information on the activities at the base. The stress of this investigation was wearing, in addition to some of the things that he saw in the high security areas.

Following the end of his contract, Edward returned to Hawaii and managed to get a Civil Service job with the Navy Environmental & Preventive Medicine Unit 6 based in Pearl Harbour (possibly with the covert help of some of his father's friends). Since then, he has worked diligently and been promoted. He is particularly noted for his people skills and willingness to work away from the office (NEPMU covers all of the Pacific, Asia and Australia).

Family: Edward's father died in 1980, as a result of the health problems acquired during his service in Vietnam. Edward's mother died in an alcohol related autombile accident in 1986. Edward married Susanne, his high school sweetheart, following his graduation from the University of Washington. His marriage foundered and Susanne returned home shortly before he took the contract on Johnson Atoll. His son, Stephen, was conceived during a brief reconciliation during this contract. Stephen is now cordially divorced and there is a liberal custody arrangement for Stephen.
