Just because you have a 680x0 Macintosh doesn't mean that you are out in the cold for network gaming. Afterall, everyone knows an obsolete Mac is more useful than a PC of the same age. So, whether you've held onto your old Mac to network with your new Mac, or your old Mac is giving you all the computing power you need, you still have a good selection of games to choose from!

I also want to thank Schizo for the effort in keeping the flame alive in Mac 68k Games. I asked him if he would host this page on his site because I feel it's important to make resources available for older Mac owners, and it seemed that it would be reaching its target audience directly having it posted on here. I want to thank him for that.

The following is merely a list of the networkable multiplayer games for the 68k Mac (quite a few, huh? ;-). If your looking for a game description or review, game specs, and related links, I suggest going to my Netgames List page. My Networkable Mac Games site also covers networking basics if you need help hooking up two Macs, and performance tuning (which is especially useful for older Macs).

I have a 68k Mac, are there any games I can still play?

Depends on how low-end you mean.

If you a have a "classic" Mac (one of those lovable B/W 9" screens):

Classic Mac owners should also check out the Netgames of Yesteryear page for some gaming history on the Mac. Did you know the Mac was the first personal computer to support network gaming? Are you surprised? ;-) Read stories from the people who started it all.

If you have a LC or better:

The following will also work if you have a 25mHz or faster 68030 (such as the LC III):

If you have a Centris/Quadra:
Your options are pretty much open to any game, as long as a PowerMac is not required. Go nuts!

And finally, there are plenty of games that are Internet-only client games that can be played on the Mac. Whether you are interested in playing board games like Chess, Backgammon, or Go, there are clients for you to log on and play people from all over the world. Or you can discover an entire universe in Internet MUDding, where people hang out and chat or strike out on adventures in a role-playing text-based dungeons (much like the popular board game Dungeons & Dragons). Visit my On-Line Games page for details and links to software.
