"Pagi-Sore" (Morning-Evening)
I began to study batik, a wax resist dying process, in 1972. This led to the discovery of the batik of Indonesia. I worked in this medium for many years, but later came to resent the transient nature of dyes, which fade slowly with exposure to light. Since each piece takes weeks or months of painstaking work, I could no longer stand to watch them slowly vanishing before my eyes. So I have developed a method of using the Indonesian wax applicator, the tjanting, for applying both oil and acrylic paints on canvas, and can now make permanent the designs and concepts of the batiks that I love. I know of no one else who has tried this, except for a young man in a small village in Java, who became my student, and my teacher.
Because of my love for batik, I began playing with the University of Hawaii Gamelan Ensemble about 8 years ago. This has only increased my love of Indonesian culture, particularly that of central Java. With roots in Milwaukee, and my home in Hawaii, and a part of myself left behind in an obscure village in Java, my work is something of a departure from traditional batik. These paintings are not computer generated. I hope you have enjoyed it.
