The Kodak Hula Show is considered an institution in Waikiki. It is the longest running hula show in Hawaii and has been around since 1937. The regular one hour performance is held on the grounds of the Waikiki Shell amphitheater in Kapiolani Park. Show time is at 10 o'clock a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with bleacher-type seating for guests and spectators.
The show features Hawaiian male and female performers who dance the authentic kahiko (ancient) hula and the auana (modern) hula. Some Tahitian dance numbers are also performed. The dancers are attired in authentic grass and ti leaf skirts and wearing colorful floral leis. Also featured is a live Hawaiian band made up of older Hawaiian women who play traditional Hawaiian music using guitars, ukeleles, and other Hawaiian musical instruments. Some of the performers are either old-time originals or are sons and daughters of the original members of the cast.
During the show, couples who are celebrating their wedding anniversaries or couples who have recently married are recognized and given special leis by the performers. After the performance willing participants from among the audience are also invited to join an impromptu hula lesson. They are taught basic hula moves and the meaning of these movements are explained.
The show has been preserving the tradition and culture of the hula for more than six decades and proudly continues to share the ancient and modern stories of Hawai. It is offered to the public free of charge, and provide some good opportunities for amateur and professional photographers. In 1999, after Kodak withdrew sponsorship of this popular visitor attraction, the Hogan Family Foundation, agreed to continue sponsoring the show.
