General election day is always observed on the first Tuesday in November. State and local government elections are held on this day, as well as presidential and congressional elections in the appropriate years. Everywhere in the country the day is set aside for the election of officials in national, state, county, and city governments. Every citizen of the United States eighteen years of age or over who has committed no serious crime, is mentally sound, has lived in the community for a certain length of time, and has registered in the community may vote in the elections.
