Attack on the head of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo in Argentina

Argentina, september 20, 2002, Latino Land.

3.45 am. She was awake, maybe just because of old age, maybe because of the party in the neighbourhood.....

In the dark, as dark is their horizon, gunmen fired shots at her home, at her house.

Aimed at her Heart, that is, her struggle.

War ammunition was used, destroyed door, windows, did damage inside the house..

"if i was standing...", she said with no fear and the same old determination and dignity that fuels the Mothers and the Grandmothers' 30 years old walking the Plaza, the country, the world, the One Heart, dancing the cry for Justice and life, "if i were standing they would have taken my head off".

Gunmen fired shots at the house of Estela Carlotto, the Grandmother of Plaza de Mayo and Mother herself, two days after she formally pressed courts to investigate brutal and dirty police repression, to investigate that the same dirty repression, the same style, the same methodology of hate and death that unfolded during the military dictatorships is going on.

Still going on.

The Old Lady is head of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo.

Their struggle needs not an introduction. As Dignity does not need it neither.

No surprise, police and judicial officers did "not comment" on the case.

Truly indeed, the shots and the bullets were explicit enough."This is a direct reply to the report we filled with the Supreme Court a few days ago" said the 72-year-old Carlotto, and added that it was the most brutal attack against her in 25 years of human rights advocacy and struggle.

Her report parallels between repression by the Buenos Aires police today and the methods used by "security" forces during the Land's last genocidal military dictatorship, when more than 30000 people were kidnapped, tortured and murdered, and their babies appropriated and their identity taken away.

Babies, men and women now, that they are still searching and finding, and offering to them the gift of uncovering their own identity.

The month of August is to be remembered, when dozens of people, blaming the police for the kidnap, torture and murder of a local young guy set on fire a neighbourhood police station on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, sparking one of the most intense upheavals, as all of them, for Justice, in the country so far in this year.

But now it is september, and "This is not the first time there has been an attack against a human rights advocate in Argentina" Sergio Sorin said, an Argentina Amnesty International's spokes person.

"But there will be no effective intimidation against anyone who is seeking the truth as long as they count on support from millions of human rights advocates around the world" he added.

True indeed! Here we are!! for the dead not to continue to die the death of oblivion, for the living to abide in dignity as struggle and dance..

Estela Carlotto recognized the used bullets.

They were of the same kind as the ones found in her murdered daughter's skull, after the body was found, after difficult and intense years of search.

The message was clear.

So is the dign determination of this Mothers and Grandmothers, keeping the struggle on track, guardians of the Memory, unfolding the horizon at each step.

Sometimes, so many times, insistent times,

the always criminal Power and Empire with no name or motherland,

with the occasional face of the essential ignorance,

abiding in some anonymous face or hand,

anonymous because its author does not exists in time or memory

Tries to erase hide destroy

the word that is active Memory that dignly resists and creates,

(and they are not two different things)

Each time

each repeated time, insistent time,

the word and the Memory comes back to life again new

fresh dancing fertile

scenting the step

of the tomorrow that enbrothers in dignity.

Burns in the Memory

the necessary horizon.

In solidarity with the Grandmothers and the struggle for identity
