On every dive into the sea off Kona, we see shells of many descriptions and species. Granted, not as many as we once saw, but still lots of 'em. Some are hard to find, but they are there. Many are capable of camouflage, making them very difficult to spot - thank goodness, or we wouldn't have any left to show people. Shell collectors are a special breed. I'm one of 'em. They are getting much more conservative. They say shell conservationists are those who have their collections complete. I'm afraid I'm one of those, too. In the early days no one considered the devastation we were creating by taking everything in sight. Now we see the errors in our ways and promote leaving things where they belong. Note this picture... it shows so many different shells it is hard to pin-point any one particular
species to admire. This is how the ocean floor once looked. Today? Not a chance. But,if we take precautions, it could look like this again. Let's hope that happens. |
