The fine art
of freehand airbrushing on canvas and some creative pencil
artworks.
A note on my airbrush artwork:
all portrait airbrush artwork and most of my visionary
airbrush work are done completely freehand. As I absolutely
detest any use of masking and templating in fine art, all of
my fine art paintings are done completely freehand. Being a
perfectionist, every canvas is prepared with the utmost care
on priming, typically with 5 or 6 layers of fine-grade gesso,
and every color pigment and airbrush paint is custom-mixed.
This is done to achieve the finest paint flow from the
airbrush onto the canvas surface. As indeed my airbrush
technique is of completely freehand, customized paint mix and
multiple layers of gesso application are a necessity rather
than a luxury.
For the airbrush enthusiast, I
use only the finest grade airbrush paint medium - ComArt
airbrush paint, which I blend with filtered water and ComArt
airbrush medium. For compressor setting, I set it to around 17
PSI for ultra smooth airbrushing action and to achieve the
finest lines and shades. My airbrush of choice is Iwawa HP-C
and HP-A 0.18mm Micron, and I always paint with the airbrush
crown removed for a superior control over paint flow and to
achieve the finest of lines (equivalent to a hairline).
Airbrushing is an artform in
itself and is certainly not a simple means of painting a
surface with spray paints. And as such, it has taken me half a
decade of experimentation to perfect my technique. Freehand
airbrushing is not for everyone, but it is a technique that I
have always preferred and mastered over many years of trial
and error. Although extremely difficult and arduous an effort
to achieve and perfect, when mastered, freehand airbrushing
will open up a whole new dimension of possibilities. My
personal motto - master your craft and never settle for
anything less than perfect.
