What is the CPR Hula?
Now playing, "Hi'ilawe"
The City and County of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services folks have created a lively mele (song) with Hawaiian style lyrics and hula (dance) called the "Ka'a Malama Ola No CPR HulaŠ." This award-winning, innovative approach to public education demonstrates the basic steps of Adult One-rescuer CPR, Hawaiian style.
Ka'a Málama Ola is the Hawaiian term for the ambulance that literally means "car that preserves life."
The lyrics, written by MICTs Sue Archer and Patty Dukes, call to the listener to learn CPR so "you can help your family." The chorus reminds callers that "minutes seem like hours, but you're not alone."
The hula demonstrates opening an airway, breathing for the patient and pumping the chest. Incorporating traditional hula movements and creative choreography into the CPR Hula was Gerlynn Silva, EMS Administration Payroll Clerk. EMS 'ohana (family and friends) perform the hula.
The music was composed by MICT Arnold Paragoso, and along with the City and County of Honolulu EMS band known as "Triage", a wonderfully lively and catchy tune was born.
The culmination and concerted efforts of all involved is an exciting and delightfully cultural experience!
