Prelude:
Like all pieces of History, the fun is in the discovery, events and understanding of people and how they lived. This home page isn’t a finished product but a ongoing process. It seems like the more we discovery the more we want to ask. Please feel free to contact us in regard to this Home Page, your comments and additions are welcome. Our special thanks to Phyllis and Sheri Smith as well as Jack and Diane Caufield for without them their would be no Web Site. In addition, I would like to thank Richard Caulfeild Hawkes for his assistance and support and recommend his Web Site for further information on the Caulfeild Family.
The Beginning:
The Caulfeild family name can currently be traced back
Shopshire England. Existing is a Will
of Alexander CAUFEILDE, of Coedigo, near Shrewsbury, dated 1581. The family moved to Oxford about 1560 when
Alexander's brother James became a Canon at Christ Church, Oxford. They lived
at Great Milton, and the children of Alexander born from 1561 onwards are
recorded as christened there. From then on the 'L' appears in the name, making
CAULFEILD. The family name is variously recorded at the time as
Cawfield, Calfhill, Callfilde and other minor variations. Names were often
distorted, being written down as they sounded to those listening. Alexander’s
son Toby was born in 1565, joined the
army around 1585 and went to Ireland with Essex on his expedition of
1599. Toby took the title name of CHARLEMONT when created a Baron in 1620,
having been made a Knight ("Sir Toby Caulfeild") in 1603. So at his
death in 1627 he was Sir Toby Caulfeild, 1st Baron Charlemont. A Viscountcy was
later added to the 5th Baron, and an Earldom to the 9th Baron (and 4th
Viscount). The Earldom died out with the death of the 3rd Earl in 1892, but the
titles of Viscount and Baron passed on to cousins. The present 19th Baron and
15th Viscount lives in Canada. See Origins of the Caulfield Name and History .
Although as yet, there is no direct tie found, between
Alexander Caufield and the Caulfeild Family Lineage a story is told by our
father from his Aunt Ella (1871) as follows: The Caufield name was
originally spelled Caulfield with a (L).
However, one of the sons (believe 1st born) was smitten with
a young maiden who worked for the family and wanted to marry her. Since the family was of some stature the
father forbid such a union. The son
married her without the father blessing and dropped the (L) from the Caulfield
name. The Caulfield Family lineage contained an Earl which Ella was especially
proud of. She would remind the Caufield
children of their need to behave in a proper manner because of their heritage.
Ella’s son, Hilbert Jenison traveled to
Ireland in WWI and visited the Caulfield family bringing back pictures of the
family that Dad remembers being shown by Ella when he was a child. It
should be noted that Alexanders Obit states he was of sturdy Scotch Irish Stock and was born in County Cavan. His family reportedly were also rabid Orangeman and some of his Great
Grandchildren were not allowed to wear green on St. Patrick's Day even after
several generations of living in the U.S.
This story is very similar to family lore reported from
another Caulfield on an ancestory message board. In this story a Robert
Caulfield (B about 1800) was in the line of an Earl or Viscount. However, he chose to marry Mary Bradly an
Irish innkeeper’s daughter. Due to his
choice in marriage he supposedly lost all monies, land and titles. Supposedly they emmigrated to the the US
about 1845, first to South Carolina then Baltimore with at least one son James
Albert (B. about 1823). James Albert married Margaret Sharp. They had four
children, Albert William, Mary Emma, Leonora and Robert Henry Francis. Albert William married Rosalie Hamiltion.
They lived in Baltimore and had ten children. Unfortunately, this message was
posted over 3 years ago in 1999 and the email contact is no longer active.
It should be noted that the given name Robert was used with some frequency in the Ven John Caulfeild of Benown family but rarely elsewhere in the Caulfeild lineage. In addition, the birth date of Robert Caulfield’s children could be compatible with that of Alexander Caufield.
The Caufield/Caulfield family name became prevalent in
Scotland as well. Col. William Caulfeild, the Governor of Fort
George near Inverness in Scotland, was a descendant of the original
"plantation" Caulfeilds. A career soldier, he came over
from Ireland to join General Wade in his suppression of Scotland after the
Jacobite uprisings. As Inspector of Roads between 1732 and 1767 he was
responsible for the building of 800 miles of roads through the Highlands. He
was Governor of Fort George near Inverness from 1761 to his death in 1767. It is believed that most of his children
gravitated back to Ireland. Col. William’s son, the Ven John Caulfeild of
Benown was an Archdeacon at Kilmore Cathedral, in the town
of Cavan, Cavan Co..
The Ven John was not of the direct title line, but
was a twice great grandson of William Caulfeild, 1st Viscount Charlemont, and
second cousin of the 1st Earl of Charlemont.
It is becoming apparent that Ven John returned to Ireland in
the early 1770s, having possibly grown up in Scotland and had his
first formal church appointment at Coulsdon, in Surrey (south of
London) from 1764-66. There is then a gap to 1774 when we know of his
first appointment in Ireland at Knockbride in the Diocese of Kilmore. For
the next 10 years or so he would have lived in Glebe Houses provided by
the Church of Ireland Board of First Fruits (yes, that is what it was
called!), as he moved from parish to parish, culminating in his appointment as
Archdeacon at Kilmore (Cavan County) in 1776. His speedy ascent through the
ranks was no doubt aided by the fact that the Bishop of Kilmore was a family
connection! My guess is that Castle Cosby (Cavan County) was provided by a
local benefactor for the use of senior Cathedral clergy, or he may have
rented it which was quite usual then. It was perhaps no coincidence that
the Cosby family came from Stradbally, where his parents' estate of Raheenduff
was situated. He was probably based at Castle Cosby for the next 35
years until a final move north in 1810 to Derryloran, which is the
parish of Cookstown, Co Tyrone. The last three of his children were probably born at
the Castle and all the children would have grown up there, including
Alexander Gordon (b.1776) about whom we know nothing other than that he
"drowned in the Ganges". Incidentally, the name 'Castle' in Ireland
does not necessarily imply a huge fortified building. They are sometimes quite
modest houses on the site of former Plantation fortified bawns, and
sometimes with the old ruin adjacent.
His father, Col William Caulfeild of Fort George,
died in 1767 by which time John and his elder brother Wade Toby were the only
surviving sons. There would have been an inheritance, Wade Toby getting the
Raheenduff estate and John the remainder. My guess is that John spent his money
on land in Co Westmeath to the north of Athlone, principally Benown. So to call
him "Ven John of Benown" is perfectly correct. How it was that
he came to choose the Athlone area we do not know. A good house was built
at Benown around 1800, and eventually sold by his grandson Robert (of
Bloomfield, Camolin and Coolamber). Courtesy Richard Caulfeild Hawkes
Based on the
collaboration of two similar stories it seems likely that an “Errant
Caufield/Caulfield” may have existed and that an out of place marriage did
occur. The fact that their were Scotch/Irish Caulfeilds in Cavan County of a high
stature suitable for such a scandal adds credence to the possibility of such a
happening. The
given name of Robert and the birth dates are consistent with such an event. The
unknown father of Robert could have been Alexander Gordon Caulfeild b. 1776,
one of the sons of Ven John, or one of his other sons for that matter. Very
little is known about some members of the family at the current time. Although we may never find a recording of
such an event, I for one, will give our “Aunt Ella’s” family Lore it’s due.
The Maneely (Meneely, Mineely, Miennely, Mcneely) Family Name appears to be a derivative of Mac Neill of Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. In 1605-1609 the plantation of Ulster was started. Presbyterians from Scotland were sent to Ulster to displace Gaelic-Irish Catholics (who were either driven to western Connaught or stayed inUlster as peasant laborers) and to strengthen English rule (see Ireland Historical Background ). The first appearance of the name in LDS records appears in 1679 with the marriage of Elizabeth Maneely. It is followed by another entry of a John Maneely (abt. 1735). It is possible that there is a lineage connection to Elizabeth Caufield from these earlier entrys. Research on the Maneely Family Lineage is ongoing (see Origins of the Maneely Name and History) .

Effective family history research
requires an understanding of the historical events that affected your ancestors
and record keeping. Learning about wars, local events, laws, migrations,
settlement patterns, and economic or religious trends may help you understand
family movements. These events may have led to the creation of records that
mention your ancestors.
Your family history research will
be more interesting if you learn about the events that shaped your ancestors'
lives.
Historical
Overview
1002-14 Brian Boru created a united
Irish Kingdom.
1169-1270 The Normans invaded Ireland from
England. A feudal system was imposed, and modern agricultural practices were
introduced. Towns and cities were built. English common law was practiced. The
government was centered at Dublin in the "Pale". Norman-Irish lords
held 70% of the Island. The Gaelic-Irish held lands in the northwest and
southwest.
1270-1484 The Gaelic-Irish gradually took
back most of Ireland, and the Norman-Irish became assimilated into the Gaelic
life and language. Toward the end of this period the Norman-Irish familyof
Fitzgerald of Kildare effectively governed Ireland while the English crown was
busy with various wars at home and with France.
1494 The English crown officially
claimed Ireland as part of England. Meetings and legislative drafts of the
Irish parliament were subject to the control of the English king and council.
But in 1496, Kildare, the lord deputy who had ruled Ireland before 1494, was
reinstated.
1541 Henry VIII of England became
King of Ireland.
1550s & 1580s English families were sent to
Ireland to receive estates from the crown as rewards for service. Civil
servants received lands in Munster province. Many Irish families were
displaced.
1560 The Anglican church (Church of Ireland) became the state
church of Ireland under Elizabeth I.
1558-1603 During Elizabeth's reign, any
who challenged her authority were punished with a "scorched earth"
policy and the sword.
1607 Ninety-nine Gaelic-Irish earls,
who refused to accept the "surrender and regrant" land policy of
Elizabeth I and her successor James I, left Ireland for the continent, never to
return. This marked the end of the old Gaelic order and established England as
the conqueror of Ireland.
1605-1609 The plantation of Ulster was
started. Presbyterians
from Scotland were sent to Ulster to displace Gaelic-Irish Catholics (who were
either driven to western Connaught or stayed inUlster as peasant laborers) and
to strengthen English rule.
1619 The earliest known Church of
Ireland parish register (St. John, Dublin) was begun.
1634 A law was passed requiring that
Church of Ireland registers be kept.
1637 Presbyterian worship was suppressed by the Church of
Ireland.
mid-1600s The Quaker, Congregationalist, and Baptist movements
began. The Huguenot migrations to Ireland also began.
1641-49 Ulster natives overthrew English
colonial rule, and Irish rebels (an alliance of the Gaelic-Irish and
Norman-Irish) established a Catholic government called the Confederation of
Kilkenny.
1649-52 Oliver Cromwell crushed the
rebellion in Ireland. Catholics who could prove they had not been involved in
the rebellion were given estates in West Clare. During the Cromwellian
Plantation, lands were confiscated from the Norman-Irish (Catholic) lords and
awarded to Protestant supporters, mainly in the counties of Leix, Offaly,
Tipperary, Wexford, Leitrim, and Longford.
1674 The oldest known Presbyterian
register (Antrim, County Antrim) was begun.
1690 The Irish Parliament was
established in Dublin.
1695-1728 The Penal Laws against Catholics
were in force. Catholic clergy were banished. The Catholic church was forbidden
to keep parish registers, and Catholics were deprived of the rights to own
property, hold office, and vote.
1719 The Toleration Act was passed, protecting Protestant
dissenters.
1726 Nonconforming Presbyterians separated from the main
Presbyterian body to form the presbytery of Antrim.
1720 British Parliament began to
legislate for Ireland, and the British House of Lords had the powers of a
supreme court in Irish law cases.
1747 The Methodist movement began.
1750s Some Catholic registers in urban
parishes were begun. Many Church of Ireland registers were begun.
1772-95 Catholic Relief Acts gradually
restored the rights taken away by the Penal Laws.
1782-93 An act was passed validating marriages performed by
Presbyterian ministers (1782). Legislative acts gave power back to the Irish Parliament and more
rights to Irish Roman Catholics.
1800 Ireland united with England and
Scotland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
1819 The Presbyterian church began to require its ministers to
keep records.
1821 The first genealogically useful
census was taken.
1829 Irish Catholics became free to
practice Catholicism without legal persecution. Many Catholic records were
begun.
1845 Civil registration of
non-Catholic marriages began.
1845-49 Potato Famine. Blight
destroyed the potato crop for several consecutive years, resulting in
starvation and disease. Over a million died and millions more emigrated.
1850-1914 Emigration continued, which helped to stabilize the economy.
1850 The Reform Act was passed, basing
the right to vote on occupation rather than on property ownership.
1858 The Principle Probate Registry
began proving Irish probates.
1864 Civil registration of births and
deaths began. Marriage registration began to include Catholics.
1869 The Church of Ireland ceased to
be recognized as the state church.
1876 A law was passed requiring
Church of Ireland registers to be stored in the Public Record Office, Dublin.
1878 The 1876 storage law was amended
to allow Church of Ireland ministers with suitable storage facilities to retain
their records.
1919-22 Civil strife resulted in 1,468
deaths. A treaty, signed on 7 January 1922, split Ireland into the
predominantly Catholic Republic of Ireland and the predominantly Protestant
Northern Ireland.
1922 Irish Civil War. Irregulars of the Irish Republican
Army opposed to the 1922 treaty occupied the Four Courts building where
many Irish records were housed.
The building was burned and many records destroyed. A separate record
repository was established for Northern Ireland. The Public Record Office,
Dublin, burned, destroying
many Church of Ireland parish
records and other documents of genealogical value.
