I am chairman of the independent division of orthopedic surgery at Queen’s Medical Center.

Terry Smith, M.D.
Dr. Terry G. Smith was born and raised in the inter-mountain West. He went to college at the University of Utah, graduating Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and thereafter continued at the University of Utah School of Medicine, graduating with honors, Alpha Omega Alpha. He subsequently came to Hawaii for orthopedic residency.

Subsequent to completion of his orthopedic residency, Dr. Smith went on for further subspecialty training in spinal surgery at Louisiana State University. This encompassed complex surgeries of the neck and back, both in children as well as adults. After completing this training, he returned to Hawaii where he has been in private practice since. His practice has a strong emphasis on diseases of the spine as well as treating general orthopedic problems. He was an associate clinical professor at the University of Hawaii up until January 1998, when constraints of private practice made it necessary for him to step down position.

He continues to be active in training of both residents and medical students at the University of Hawaii. Dr. Smith is an innovative spine surgeon and is the only surgeon in Hawaii to undertake laparoscopic fusions of the lumbar spine as well as being trained in minimally invasive surgery to the upper back. At this point in time, he is one of the few orthopedic surgeons trained and actively performing laser discectomies, as well as performing interbody fusion cage operations.
